Challenge
A national financial services corporate was investing over R3 million annually in enterprise development but could not demonstrate measurable business impact. Previous programmes delivered training certificates and compliance reports, but participating SMEs showed no meaningful revenue growth, job creation, or operational improvement. The corporate needed a programme that satisfied BBBEE reporting requirements while producing genuine economic outcomes.
Approach
SBM designed and delivered a structured 12-week programme for 18 SMEs across Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. Each participant began with a Scale Readiness Audit to establish a baseline across leadership, operations, market position, financial health, and growth capacity. From there, the programme moved through three phases: founder development (weeks 1 to 4), covering leadership coaching, business model refinement, and strategic positioning; growth activation (weeks 5 to 8), building marketing systems, sales pipelines, and customer acquisition strategies; and sustainability embedding (weeks 9 to 12), focused on process documentation, financial controls, and impact measurement. Each entrepreneur received individual coaching sessions alongside group workshops, with SBM providing monthly progress reports to the corporate sponsor.
Result
72% of participants reported measurable revenue growth within 90 days of programme completion. 14 new permanent jobs were created across the cohort. The average Scale Readiness Score improved from 38% to 67% across all five pillars. The corporate sponsor renewed the programme for a second year based on the reporting quality and commercial outcomes delivered.
